Biography of Michael Phelps

Early Life

Michael Phelps, an American swimmer, was born and raised in the Towson area, north of Baltimore. He is the youngest of three children. His mother, Deborah Sue "Debbie" (née Davisson), is a middle school principal, while his father, Michael Fred Phelps, played American football in high school. His parents divorced in 1994, and his father remarried in 2000. Phelps graduated from Towson High School in 2003.

Early Swimming Career

Phelps started swimming at the age of seven, partly influenced by his sister. When Phelps was in sixth grade, he was diagnosed with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). At the age of ten, he held national records for his age group and began training under coach Bob Bowman. Phelps achieved more success
