A long ago Christmas Eve in a poor Atlanta neighborhood changed everything Robert Lupton believed about helping the poor.
Members of his church had brought gifts for the children, mounds of prettily wrapped toys and clothes and all sort of things the parents could not afford.
The children were ecstatic. The mother was gracious but seemed sort of embarrassed. The father had slipped out.
"That's the first time I thought that charity could be hurtful," Lupton said in an interview with The Greenville News before he spoke to the annual luncheon of United Ministries, which provides educational services, job training and other support for the poor.
The father had been shown to his family as someone who could not provide for them.
It was the beginning of his philosophy that sometimes well-intentioned people, churches and organizations actually harm the people they are trying to help. He calls it toxic charity, which is
